shower the people you love with love

my baby brother is going to be a dad. holy cow. i remember his birth!!! way too wierd. sunrise, sunset...right mom. this weekend we held a shower at our house for him, laney and grandchild #23. it was fun to get together with all the girls, even the little ones, to celebrate. laney had all the little helpers she needed to fetch her whatever she needed (when they weren't throwing things in the pond)

had to post this one of my mom. no hawes event is complete unless anne is fixing something for someone--in this case the zipper on lucy's pants.

memorial day parade

isaac's first grade holds a memorial day parade where all the kids decorate their bikes or scooters and ride around the school. this being our first year to participate, isaac was rearing to go. i thought he should dress up in our statue of liberty costume but he would have none of it as lady liberty is a lady--we can always hope for mallory.and he's off--i think his pinweel on the back broke off shortly after he left the driveway.

parading in all his RW&B glory. mal and eli were staged perfectly at the beginning of the parade route as to get the most candy--they waited patiently watching fervently for their brother who promised that he would throw them candy--wait...i see his flag draped helmet..oh yes, that's him...here he comes!! get ready to pounce! "isaac!!!! throw us some...! what?! only ONE starlight mint! that's it! one lousy starlight mint--for TWO children (and one mom whose worst trait is pilfering sweets from her children) expecting to reap the rewards of the long 2 block walk to the school. next year guys, next year.

a first

through 9 years of dealing with children and gum, i finally had my first "gum in the hair"disaster. we've been really good with the whole "in your mouth or in the garbage rule" but mallory finally found herself with a bit not in her mouth or the garbage, but in her newly haircutted hair. i've never had to smear butter on a child--but i will say, it worked like a charm. the gum came right out and mallory enjoyed her greeezy look until she found the bath.
you will notice the swimming suit. yep, she still wears one every day. mostly it's hiding under her clothes-but there, in secret, nontheless.

what eli thinks about it all!

memorial day

ie: haircut day @ the mcqueen home.
line 'em up. everyone gets a trim (or a buzz--if you are male and under 12, much to isaac's dismay)

we had many fun outdoor projects planned for this most recent holiday, like weeding the garden, planting the next bit of corn, beans, and peas, painting the front and back doors, mowing and edging, all fabulous options for a day off. but the weather didn't cope, and we were stuck inside--so, out come the clippers. the boys were in desperate need and the girls just wanted something a little different. isaac's hair is so thick that his head sweats when he thinks too hard :) and it was way past due.
this is the pile that came off all their heads. we may have been able to make a small wig with it.

ouch!!

a few weeks ago, megan had the privilege of getting 6 of her baby teeth pulled so her permanent teeth would have more room to come into her tiny mouth. she hasn't allowed pictures of her face yet so i thought i'd show off what came out. these suckers are huge!! check out those roots! to all our ortho/dental contacts: cory, jeremy, brandon, anybody, is this normal? these baby teeth don't look very babyish to the untrained eye. the holes left in her gums are still trying to heal, two weeks later. she was a champ though. our dentist didn't put her out and she said she heard the whole thing, roots popping and all. gross!! one of these days i'll snap a picture of her face when she least expects it. but right now, she's still so self conscious and calls herself toothless uncle lou (though she, nor matt, nor i have a toothless uncle lou)
